Every painting begins with a blank page.

“One of the most rewarding parts of this path is the moment a student makes something, with their own hands, out of a blank white page.”

Pick a pigment from the paintings you just walked past and drag across the paper. Water carries the colour, and the edges dry darker, as real watercolour does.

The artist

Born at the end of winter. Named for spring.

بهار Bahar
noun, Persian — spring, the season that follows Esfand, the last month of winter.

I’m Bahar Hamze, born in Esfand 1382 (early 2004) and a student of Visual Arts and Painting at Islamic Azad University, West Tehran.

My relationship with painting began long before university, before I even knew I would one day follow it professionally. As a child I always had something to build, draw or make: small handicrafts, and drawings I sent to television channels. Today, those same paintings hang on the walls of exhibitions in Tehran.

For more than seven years I have worked seriously in oil, and watercolour has become an important part of my path as well. Alongside my own work, I teach oil painting and watercolour professionally.

Perhaps that is why, after all these years, making things still holds the same excitement it did when I was a child. Now I can follow it more seriously, teach it to others, and share part of my own world on canvas and paper.

I don’t see art as only a skill or a profession. For me, art is a way of coming closer to ourselves: to know who we are, to grow quiet, to step back from the noise of the mind, and to find a place for the feelings we sometimes have no words for.

برای من، هنر راهی برای نزدیک‌تر شدن به خودمان است.
